Albury Wodonga Community Radio Celebrates 40 Years.
While recent event’s may have called off the physical celebrations, there are at least 40 reason’s why staff at one of the country’s earliest community stations are rejoicing. 2020 marks the historic year that is, the 40th anniversary of the Community Radio Albury Wodonga Cooperative Society Ltd.
Station presenter, Allan Wilson was engaged to produce a memorial publication, ‘A History of 2REM Community Radio’. The book that celebrates the people, stories and history of the 2REM station. The narrative follows the rich chronological order of events and real-life recollections from the station’s colourful characters from over the years.
Amongst some notable mentions are the many commercial success stories that have originated from the station, “Notable names as Ian Becker: News Cocoordinator with channel 7 (now Prime), Lars Peterson 2AY Albury & 2WS Sydney, Steve James 2AY Albury, Mark Rosevear B104.9 & The River 105.7 Albury, Peter Davies 2AY & The River 107.5, Brad George B104.9, Jason Mathey B104.9, Loretta Smit 2RG Griffith, Samantha Blair 2WG Wagga and Gaye Patterson ABC Broadcaster with ABC Alice Springs.”
All of this took place against the background of many other flings with Australian music nobility. “Another great Country presenter came along in the ’80s he was better known as “Mr. Country” Keith Melbourne. Ray Kernaghan, presented this unique genre of music back in the early 1980s. Ray later went on to become a country music performer, recording many albums. He makes no secret of the fact that his success can be attributed in no small way to Keith Melbourne’s guidance and dedication relating to his career.”
